Police investigate serious, morning collision
Our Traffic Section is investigating a single vehicle-collision this morning that resulted in life-threatening injuries for one person.
Just before 4 a.m. today, Saturday, Jan. 3, 2025, a 2011 Toyota RAV4 with five youth inside was travelling north at a high rate of speed on Deerfoot Trail, approaching Memorial Drive S.E.
It was snowing at the time and the road was slippery.
The driver failed to negotiate a curve in the road and struck a barrier, causing the car to spin, and ejecting one of the passengers, who was not wearing a seatbelt.
The car then crossed all northbound lanes, struck the base of a bridge on the side of the road and continued north before coming to rest beside the highway.
The female passenger who was thrown from the vehicle suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and is currently in hospital.
The other passengers were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Speed and weather conditions are believed to be factors in the collision.
Northbound Deerfoot Trail was closed for several hours but all lanes of traffic are now open again.
