Police investigate serious-injury motorcycle collision

We continue to investigate a collision that occurred yesterday in the northeast, leaving a motorcyclist with serious injuries.

On Thursday, June 22, 2023, at approximately 5:30 p.m., a motorcycle collided with a vehicle on westbound McKnight Boulevard N.E., west of Deerfoot Trail.

It is believed that at the time of the collision, a man in his 40s was riding a 2009 Suzuki GSX-R1000 westbound in the left lane, when he approached stationary traffic that extended from Edmonton Trail N.E. The man braked heavily as he approached the traffic and attempted to steer around a stationary 2016 Honda CR-V that was also in the left lane.

The rider collided with the rear right corner of the Honda CR-V and lost control of the motorcycle. The motorcycle fell onto its side and slid onto the concrete divider separating McKnight Boulevard from southbound Deerfoot Trail before coming to a rest on top of the rider. The rider was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

The occupants of the Honda CR-V – two men in their 20s – were not injured.

Excessive speed and alcohol are considered contributing factors in the collision.

Our Traffic Section continues to investigate the circumstances of the collision.
