Police investigate serious-injury collision

We continue to investigate a collision that occurred in the city’s southeast, leaving one woman in serious, life-threatening condition.

At approximately 3:50 p.m. on Monday, May 8, 2023, a three-vehicle collision occurred on Macleod Trail S.E. near the Canyon Meadows Drive S.E. interchange.

At the time, it is believed a silver 2012 Volkswagen Routan, operated by a 69-year-old man, with a 27-year-old man as a passenger, was travelling southbound on Macleod Trail S.E. in the far-right lane. The Volkswagen struck the rear of a blue 2022 Hyundai Kona, operated by a 59-year-old woman, which caused the Hyundai to veer to the right onto an embankment and strike a light standard.

The impact with the light standard caused the Hyundai to roll down the concrete embankment for the Canyon Meadows overpass, where it came to rest in the far-right lane of southbound Macleod Trail S.E., facing east.

Shortly after striking the Hyundai, the Volkswagen continued southbound in the far-right lane of Macleod Trail S.E. and struck the rear of a red 2022 Nissan Rogue, operated by a 61-year-old woman; both vehicles came to a controlled stop.

The 59-year-old driver of the Hyundai was transported to hospital in serious, life-threatening condition.

The drivers and passenger of the Volkswagen and Nissan were treated for minor injuries on scene.

Alcohol and drugs are not considered a factor in this collision.
