Police investigate serious-injury collision on Deerfoot Trail

We continue to investigate a serious-injury collision that occurred on Deerfoot Trail near 17 Avenue S.E.

On Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, at approximately 6:15 p.m., an Acura, driven by a 20-year-old man, was travelling northbound along Deerfoot Trail S.E., and made a sudden lane change.

During the lane change, the Acura side-swiped a Kia, which was being operated by a man in his 50s.

The Kia was deflected off its path of travel, left the roadway, and landed a short distance away on a grassy embankment. Upon landing, the Kia then rolled down the embankment, striking a chain link fence and eventually came to rest on its roof. The driver of the Kia sustained minor injuries.

The Acura, upon striking the Kia, entered the grassy shoulder and struck a support beam for overhead directional signage. The driver was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Excessive speed on the part of the Acura is being investigated as a factor in this collision. Impairment is not believed to be a factor in this collision.

Our Traffic Section continues to investigate and anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has dashcam footage is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers through any of the following methods:
