Police investigate serious-injury collision involving cyclist
We continue to investigate a collision that occurred yesterday morning on Macleod Trail S.E. involving a cyclist.
At approximately 7 a.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023, we were called to the intersection of Macleod Trail and Shawnessy Boulevard S.E.
At the time, it is believed a man was riding a bicycle northbound in the right lane of southbound Macleod Trail S.E., while reportedly yelling and waving a broom at vehicles.
At the same time, a minivan, operated by a man in his 80s, was travelling southbound in the same lane. As the minivan approached the overpass for Shawnessy Boulevard S.E., it struck the cyclist.
As a result of the impact, the cyclist sustained serious, life-threatening injuries.
The bicycle was projected into oncoming traffic where it was struck and became wedged under a small sedan driven by a woman in her 50s. The sedan came to a controlled stop a short distance after striking the bicycle.
The minivan had significant damage to the front of the vehicle and came to a stop just south of the overpass.
Neither of the drivers sustained any injuries as a result of the collision.
