Police investigate serious collision

We continue to investigate a serious injury collision that occurred on Deerfoot Trail earlier this morning.

At approximately 3:10 a.m., today, Saturday, March 26, 2022, we were called for reports of a serious two vehicle collision on northbound Deerfoot Trail, just north of the 16 Avenue interchange.

It is believed that a 2017 Toyota Prius Checker Cab had pulled over on the right-hand shoulder of northbound Deerfoot Trail after two passengers fell ill and stepped out of the vehicle, leaving the driver, a 39-year-old man, and a rear driver-side passenger, a 21-year-old woman, in the vehicle.

Shortly after the cab pulled over, it is believed a 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan being driven by a 19-year-old man traveling northbound on Deerfoot Trail drifted onto the shoulder and struck the cab on the rear driver-side corner. The impact caused the cab to be pushed from the roadway, spun around and then returned to the roadway coming to final rest across the two center lanes of northbound Deerfoot Trail.

Following the impact, the Volkswagen spun on the roadway and came to final rest in the right lane of northbound Deerfoot Trail facing south.

The driver and passenger of the cab were removed from the vehicle by the Calgary Fire Department and taken to Foothills Hospital, the driver in serious condition and the passenger in life-threatening condition. They currently remain in hospital. The two cab passengers who had fell ill and left the vehicle did not sustain any injuries.

The driver of the Volkswagen did not sustain any injuries.

Speed is not believed to be a factor in the collision. Alcohol is being investigated as a factor in the collision.

The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section continues to investigate the circumstances of this collision and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact police at the non-emergency number 403-266-1234.
