Police investigate homicide in southeast Calgary

The suspicious death that was reported yesterday in the southeast community of Shawnessy has now been deemed a homicide.

At approximately 3 p.m., on Monday, March 25, 2024, we responded to a hotel in the 0-100 block of Shawville Road S.E., for reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a man within one of the suites suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. He was declared deceased at the scene.

Investigators believe this is a targeted incident that occurred in the suite where the man was found and presented no risk to other hotel guests.

Our Homicide Unit is in the process of speaking with witnesses, gathering information and reviewing CCTV footage. No arrests have been made at this time.

The person that was taken into custody yesterday at the scene has since been released without charge.

Following an autopsy completed today, Tuesday, March 26, 2024, by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the victim has been identified as 29-year-old Liban ABDIRAHMAN.

This is Calgary’s fourth homicide of 2024.
