Police investigate fatal shooting in Vista Heights

Our Homicide Unit is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred this afternoon in the northeast community of Vista Heights.

At approximately 5:35 p.m. today, Thursday, May 18, 2023, we responded to reports of a shooting in the 2500 block of 23 Street N.E. Upon arrival, police located one man suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition. 

Shortly thereafter, officers responded to two collisions that are believed to be related to the shooting. One of the collisions occurred in the 2700 block of 23 Street N.E. Upon arrival, officers located one man who also appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The second collision occurred near the intersection of 26 Street N.E. and Sunridge Boulevard N.E. Officers responded and quickly took one man into custody.

At this time, the shooting is believed to be targeted. The person in custody and the victims are believed to be known to each other.

Homicide investigators are collecting information from witnesses and CCTV footage from the area.

An autopsy is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Friday, May 19, 2023.
