Police investigate fatal Macleod Trail collision

We continue to investigate a fatal single-vehicle collision that occurred this morning, causing the closure of Macleod Trail between 25 Avenue and 36 Avenue S.E.

At approximately 5:10 a.m., today, Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023, we responded to reports of a single-vehicle collision at Macleod Trail and 31 Avenue S.W.

At the time of the collision, it is believed that the vehicle, a late-model Lexus, operated by a man in his 20s, was travelling southbound on Macleod Trail, approaching 31 Avenue S.W. The vehicle mounted the curb at the southwest corner of the intersection and collided with a concrete bridge support for a pedestrian overpass, before coming to a rest on the north side of the adjacent cemetery.

The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speed and alcohol are being investigated as factors in the collision.
