Police investigate fatal collision on Deerfoot Trail

We continue to investigate a fatal single-vehicle collision that occurred early this morning, resulting in the death of a 37-year-old man.

At approximately 2:45 a.m. today, Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023, we responded to reports of a collision on Deerfoot Trail near Bow Bottom Trail S.E.

At the time of the collision, it is believed that a black Jeep Wrangler, driven by a woman in her 20s, was travelling southbound on Deerfoot Trail approaching the bridge over Bow Bottom Trail S.E. Witnesses reported that the vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic, when the driver lost control and began travelling sideways across the travel lanes towards the edge of the roadway.

The vehicle struck a snowbank at the edge of the roadway, travelled onto the banked snow and rolled down the embankment towards Anderson Road. As the vehicle rolled, the man in the passenger seat, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time, was ejected from the vehicle. The vehicle continued rolling to the bottom of the embankment and came to a rest on its passenger side.

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, was transported to hospital in serious but stable condition.

No charges have been laid at this time and our Traffic Section continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
