Police investigate fatal collision on Centre Street N

***UPDATE: Sadly, the driver involved in this collision due to a medical event, has died.***

Our Traffic Section continues to investigate a fatal collision involving a vehicle, cyclist and multiple other parties that occurred yesterday afternoon.

At approximately 1:35 p.m., on Saturday, June 20, 2026, a collision occurred in the northbound lanes of Centre Street N, between 19 Avenue N.E. and 21 Avenue N.E.

At that time, a black 2019 Ford Escape, driven by a man in his 70s, with a woman in her 60s as a passenger, was travelling northbound in the east curb lane. It is believed the driver suffered a medical event, causing the vehicle to drift onto the curb and strike a cyclist, a man in his 60s, who was travelling northbound in the same lane.

Investigators believe the vehicle mounted the sidewalk, striking a bus stop sign and continuing northbound, dragging the cyclist before re-entering the roadway near 20 Avenue N.E. The vehicle then travelled into the intersection at 21 Avenue N.E., where it collided with the rear passenger side of a stationary occupied Toyota Highlander, pushing it into a Chevrolet Silverado that was also stopped at the intersection.

The vehicle then mounted the curb again, entering the crosswalk and striking a pedestrian, a man in his 60s, before coming to rest after hitting a stop sign and another pole.

As a result of the collision, the cyclist was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Ford was transported to hospital in critical condition. The pedestrian sustained minor injuries. All other involved parties reported minor or no injuries.

At this time, there is no evidence that alcohol, drugs or speed were factors in this collision. Police are investigating whether a medical event was a factor in the collision.
