Police investigate fatal collision on Barlow Trail

Our Traffic Unit is investigating a fatal collision that occurred yesterday in southeast Calgary.

At about 8:35 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2025, a 2024 GMC Sierra pickup truck, driven by a 40-year-old man, was travelling northbound on Barlow Trail S.E. in the lane closest to the median, approaching the intersection at 26 Street S.E.

At the same time, a 2019 Freightliner semi-truck with an unloaded trailer, driven by a man in his 40s, turned from eastbound 26 Street S.E. into the same lane of northbound Barlow Trail S.E., entering the pickup’s path.

The pickup struck the rear corner of the trailer and became entangled. The pickup truck driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The semi-truck driver was not injured and remained at the scene.

Speed is being investigated as a possible factor in the collision. Alcohol and drug impairment are not believed to be factors. While extreme weather conditions had been affecting travel earlier in the day, at this time, we do not believe road conditions were a contributing factor.

This is Calgary’s 37th fatal collision in 2025. We continue to work with The City of Calgary to implement the Safer Mobility Plan with a common goal of Vision Zero – mobility free of fatalities and major injuries.
