Police investigate early morning serious-injury collision

Our Traffic Unit is investigating after a single-vehicle collision resulted in a man being transported to hospital in life-threatening condition.

At approximately 3:35 a.m., today, Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, police were called for reports of a single-vehicle collision that occurred in the southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail S.E., at the Peigan Trail S.E. interchange.

At that time, a white 2015 GMC Savana van, driven by a man in his 60s, was travelling southbound on Deerfoot Trail when the vehicle struck the concrete barrier of the median just south of the Peigan Trail off-ramp.

The van then crossed the three southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail before leaving the roadway, ultimately striking the bridge deck of the Peigan Trail overpass before rolling onto its roof and coming to a rest in the southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail.

The driver and lone occupant of the van was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition.

Alcohol and drugs are not considered to be factors in this collision.

Police are investigating whether speed is considered to be a factor.
