Police investigate early morning arson in Hillhurst

We are asking the public to come forward with information in relation to a fire that occurred earlier this week at a residence located in the northwest community of Hillhurst.

On Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024, at approximately 3:10 a.m., we were called to a home in the 1700 block of Eighth Avenue N.W., for reports of a fire.

The Calgary Fire Department arrived on scene and extinguished the fire. There were no injuries reported, and the property damage to the affected home was minor. However, the fire was deemed suspicious.

Police began an investigation, and now believe the fire was intentionally set.

Several residents from nearby properties came forward and reported they received threatening letters asking for bitcoin transfers, which were left on the front steps of their homes.

Police are now asking for CCTV footage from the neighbourhoods of Hillhurst, Hounsfield Heights/Briar Hill and West Hillhurst to help identify the person responsible.

Anyone with information or footage of suspicious individuals or vehicles in the area surrounding the 1700 block of Eighth Avenue N.W., on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024, from 1 to 4:30 a.m., is asked to contact police.

Throughout September and October 2024, similar arsons are believed to have occurred in Edmonton, and police are looking into whether these incidents may be connected.
