Police continue to investigate series of break-and-enters linked to travelling crime groups

We continue to investigate a series of residential break-and-enters that are believed to be connected to a recent trend involving travelling crime groups operating across several provinces.

Since the beginning of 2026, investigators have identified 43 residential break-and-enter files that share consistent indicators associated with these groups. Most of the offences have occurred in the northwest and south areas of the city, in the following communities:

·         Aspen Woods

·         Douglasdale

·         Edgemont

·         Evergreen

·         Hamptons

·         Patterson

·         Scenic Acres

·         Woodbine

In many of the incidents, suspects are believed to have accessed the homes through backyards, using them as primary entry points to remain out of view from streets and sidewalks. The offences have typically occurred between 6 and 8 p.m., a narrow early-evening window when many residents are away briefly for errands or family activities.

Investigators believe the offenders conduct short, targeted surveillance to identify homes that appear temporarily unoccupied. Once inside, suspects focus on high-value items such as jewelry, currency and other easily portable valuables. These groups often consist of two to three individuals who wear gloves and masks to conceal their identities.

In at least one incident, offenders were observed removing an entire safe from a residence, demonstrating their willingness to take larger items when uninterrupted.

We are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying those responsible and preventing further offences.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, including:

·         Unfamiliar vehicles repeatedly driving through neighbourhoods between 6 and 8 p.m.

·         Groups of two to three individuals moving between homes, appearing to check backyards or behaving discreetly.

·         Any unusual or out-of-place behaviour, even if it seems minor.

·         Homes that appear to be targeted when residents are away for short periods.

We also urge homeowners to take steps to reduce the likelihood of being targeted, including:

·         Keeping doors and windows locked.

·         Leaving lights on during early evening hours.

·         Using alarm or camera systems when possible.

·         Securing valuables in bolted or concealed safes.

·         Particularly high-value items may be safer stored off-site.

Investigators are seeking information about three vehicles believed to be associated with this series.

The first vehicle is described as a black 2023-2025 Ford Escape ST-Line with dark wheels and lights that go across the front of the vehicle.

The second vehicle is described as a black 2013-2015 Toyota RAV4 with heavy tinting.

The third vehicle is described as a black 2017-2019 Toyota Highlander with black wheels.

Anyone who sees these vehicles circulating repeatedly through neighbourhoods, parking in unusual locations or appearing out of place during the offence times is asked to contact police immediately.

Public vigilance and prompt reporting remain key to disrupting these travelling crime groups and identifying those responsible.
