Police charge woman in dental insurance fraud case

We have charged one woman in relation to submitting multiple fraudulent dental insurance claims resulting in nearly $100,000 worth of false claims.

After conducting their own investigation, the insurance provider reported to police in June 2023 that they received several discrepancies for claims regarding fillings and root canal treatments that were all submitted by the same dentist at All About Family Dental, located at 7520 Elbow Drive. S.W. Police then launched a criminal investigation.

After working collaboratively with the insurance provider, police had collected enough evidence to support a criminal charge based discrepancies and false billings affecting 53 patients between June 2015 and June 2021, totaling $97,540 in fraudulent claims. The patients were not aware of the false claims until after the investigation.

On Monday, Nov. 6, 2023, the suspect turned herself into a Calgary Police Service district office and was arrested without incident.

As a result, Alena Vladimiro SMADYCH, 53, is charged with one count of fraud over $5,000. She is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, Nov. 24, 2023.
