Police charge three youths in several 2023 cannabis store robberies

Three youths have been charged in relation to 10 cannabis store robberies dating back to 2023.

On Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023, at approximately 11:55 p.m., three suspects entered the Four20 cannabis shop, located at 2008 33 Ave. S.W., and assaulted staff members before taking merchandise, cannabis products and fleeing the store.

Police were contacted and immediately searched the area but were unable to locate the suspects.

Later that month, additional, similar robberies occurred at other cannabis stores across the city.

Given the severity of the robberies, the Calgary Police Service Robbery Unit began investigating, and based on evidence collected, investigators identified three suspects believed to be responsible for the robberies.

As the investigation continued, search warrants were executed at three residences related to the suspects on Monday, Dec. 11, 2023.

At that time clothing and cellphones were seized. The electronic devices and evidence were analyzed and subsequently connected the suspects to several robberies dating back to February 2023. 

On Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024, one of the teens, aged 18, turned himself in to police headquarters. As a result, he was charged with four counts of robbery with a firearm.

In December 2024, investigators laid charges against two other males, aged 17 and 18, who are currently wanted on warrants.

The outstanding teens are each charged with:

·         10 counts of robbery with a prohibited firearm

·         10 counts of disguise with intent

·         Seven counts of forcible confinement

·         One count of assault causing bodily harm

·         One count of theft of a motor vehicle

The teens cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, as they were under 18 when the offences occurred.
