Police charge man with robbery of five local businesses

We have charged a man in connection to a string of robberies that occurred earlier this week.

On Sunday, March 5, 2023, between approximately 1 and 1:30 p.m., it is believed an unknown man entered four businesses located in the city’s northwest, brandished a weapon while inside three of the businesses, and demanded money from employees each time before feeling.

On Monday, March 6, 2023, at approximately 5:20 p.m., it is believed the same man entered a restaurant located in the 4800 block of Centre Street N.W., and again threatened an employee with a weapon and demanded money. The employee fled the restaurant and contacted police.

The suspect left the scene in a dark-coloured SUV, which was later located by police. The man was subsequently arrested at a nearby business without incident.

As a result, we have charged William Orville TRUAX, 41, of Calgary, with five counts of robbery and three counts of wearing a disguise with intent.

He will next appear in court on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.

“This was a collaborative effort with several areas within the Service, and we are thankful to each of the business owners for contacting police and coming forward with important information that led to the quick apprehension of this offender,” said Staff Sergeant Colin Chisholm of the Calgary Police Service General Investigations Unit.
