Police charge man in two downtown bank robberies

We have arrested and charged a man in relation to two bank robberies that occurred earlier this week.

On Monday, Jan.13, 2025, at approximately 11:20 a.m., it is believed a man entered the ATB Financial located at 102 Eighth Ave. S.W.

He approached the teller, passed a note requesting money and implied he was in possession of a gun.

The suspect then fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash and employees subsequently contacted police.

A short time later at approximately 11:50 a.m., it is believed the same man attended the Scotiabank located at 531 Fourth St. S.E. He approached the teller and again passed a robbery note to staff.

The man was told to leave by a bank employee, and he exited the business without any money.

Police were contacted, and thanks to officers in District 1, the man was located a short time later in East Village and taken into custody.

As a result, Kual KUAL, 34 of Calgary, is charged with two counts of robbery.

He will appear in court today, Wednesday, Jan.15, 2025.

“This is a great example showcasing the swift actions of our officers which resulted in the arrest and apprehension of this suspect,” says Staff Sgt. Kurt Jacobs of the Calgary Police Service Robbery and Arson Unit. “These incidents can often leave victims and the public feeling fearful, so we are pleased to have taken the suspect into custody quickly following the incidents.”
