Police charge man in relation to residential fire in Monterey Park

We have charged a man believed to be responsible for a fire that occurred at a townhouse complex in the city’s northeast.

On Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, at approximately 11:05 p.m., we were called to the 0 to 100 block of Las Americas Villas N.E., for a residential fire that is believed to have begun by an explosion that came from inside one of the residences.

The fire quickly spread to neighbouring townhomes and injured several people.

The Calgary Fire Department put the fire out and worked alongside CPS arson investigators to determine the cause.

Following the investigation, it is believed the man intentionally set a fire within his home using an accelerant, causing the explosion and subsequent fire.

As a result, Gavin Peter ROBINSON, 40, of Calgary, is charged with arson, disregard for human life. 

He will next appear in court on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024.

The investigation is ongoing and we anticipate further charges will follow.
