Police charge man in hit-and-run collision
We have charged a man in relation to a hit-and-run collision that occurred in summer 2022.
On Saturday, Aug. 27, 2022, at approximately 2 a.m., we were called to the block between Sixth Avenue S.W. and Seventh Avenue S.W., at the intersection near Fourth Street S.W., for a hit-and-run incident involving pedestrians.
At the time, a four-door sedan was travelling north in the right lane. As the vehicle passed through Seventh Avenue S.W., it struck a parked and unoccupied car, which was against the right curb.
The vehicle subsequently mounted the right curb and sideswiped the passenger-side of a parked SUV, which was also along the right curb.
Standing in the vicinity of the open passenger-side door of the parked SUV, were three pedestrians, all in their early 20s.
The sedan struck all three pedestrians, with one of them being thrown approximately 12 metres, and as a result, sustained serious, life-altering injuries. The other two pedestrians suffered minor injuries.
The sedan also struck a parking sign, a bike rack and a photo radar pole as it continued north and travelled the remaining length of the block. The vehicle eventually returned to the roadway at Sixth Avenue S.W. and came to a rest.
The driver subsequently fled on foot.
All three pedestrians were transported to hospital.
As a result of our investigation, yesterday, Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2023, 28-year-old Ashton Shaneil PRASAD, of Calgary, was charged with two counts of hit-and-run, three counts of hit-and-run causing bodily harm and three counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm.
He will next appear in court on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023.
