Police charge local doctor following $2 million fraud investigation

We have charged a Calgary physician with fraud following an investigation into allegations of fraudulent billing.

Service Alberta’s Health Investigations Unit alerted the Calgary Police Service after they conducted an investigation into a doctor who is alleged to have submitted approximately $2.2 million worth of false billing claims to the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan over a two-year period.

From March 2020 to June 2022, the Health Investigations Unit investigated the billing history of a doctor working at the SF Medical Clinic located at 1106 Edmonton Trail N.E., and reported the findings to police.

It is alleged the doctor was billing the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan for additional time beyond the actual hours worked.

Our Economic Crimes Unit became involved in the investigation, and as a result, Shabeena FAZHULLA, 49, of Calgary, has been charged with one count of fraud over $5,000 in relation to the fraudulent billing submissions.

She is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, May 16, 2024.
