Police ask for public’s help to find child

The Calgary Police Service Domestic Conflict Unit is asking for the public’s help to locate a youth who is believed to be the victim of a parental abduction.

On Saturday, June 16, 2018, 11-year-old Zahraa Al AAZAWI travelled from Calgary to Egypt with her father. She was due to return to Canada on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018, according to a travel agreement between her parents. While Zahraa has had limited contact with her mother while overseas, she has not been returned to Calgary as agreed.

Zahraa’s father returned to Canada alone on Thursday, April 4, 2019, and was arrested by police at the Toronto airport. It is believed that Zahraa is now in Iraq, possibly with her father's family.

Investigators are asking for the public’s help to learn where Zahraa is located so that she can be returned to her mother. Members of Calgary’s Iraqi community are especially being asked to share any information that could help bring her home.

Ali Al AAZAWI, 38, has been charged by Canada-wide warrant with one count of parental child abduction. He is currently being transported from Toronto to Calgary to face the charges.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Zahraa is asked to contact police by calling the non-emergency line at 403-266-1234. Tips can also be left anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers using any of the following methods:
