Pedestrian killed in overnight collision

A man has died following a collision last night on 17 Avenue S.E., between a van and a pedestrian.

At approximately 9:20 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2025, we were called to the intersection of 17 Avenue and 38 Street S.E., for reports of the collision. It is believed that a 2006 GMC Savana van, operated by a man in his 50s, was travelling westbound on 17 Avenue S.E., approaching the 38 Street S.E. intersection on a green light.

At the same time, a 47-year-old man was northbound in the crosswalk on the east side of the intersection, crossing contrary to the signals when the collision occurred. The pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital where he sadly succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the van was uninjured and remained on the scene.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor in this collision, however, speed is being investigated as well as the circumstances of the pedestrian crossing against the signal.

Pedestrian Safety Month

October is pedestrian safety month. So far in 2025, there have been more than 300 collisions in Calgary involving pedestrians. This fatality brings the total to nine pedestrian deaths in 2025.

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and we are asking both motorists and pedestrians to watch out for one another to ensure everyone’s safety.

Tips for drivers:

·        Make eye contact with pedestrians

·        Drive at a safe speed and stop for pedestrians at crosswalks

·        Never pass a vehicle at a crosswalk

·        Avoid distractions: keep your eyes on the road & devices out of your hands

·        Use crosswalks and sidewalks

·        Look both ways before crossing the street

·        Follow traffic signs and signals

·        Avoid distractions: limit the use of earphones and devices when walking
