Pedestrian dies following collision in southeast Calgary

A woman in her 70s was killed this morning in a hit-and-run collision in the southeast community of Riverbend. This marks the second fatal pedestrian collision in Calgary in the past 24 hours.

At approximately 7:30 a.m. today, Thursday, Oct. 16, 2025, it is believed the woman was crossing Riverbend Drive S.E. near Riverbirch Crescent and Riverbrook Road S.E., when she was struck by a grey 2018 Ford F150, driven by a man in his 20s, which was travelling southbound.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver did not remain at the scene.

At approximately 10:50 a.m., the driver returned on foot and identified himself to investigators. He was taken into custody. The vehicle was later located in the southwest community of Canyon Meadows.

Speed and impairment are not believed to be factors in the collision.

We continue to collect evidence and speak with witnesses in support of the ongoing investigation.

So far in 2025, there have been 29 fatal collisions in Calgary, tying last year’s 10-year record high. Ten of those collisions have involved pedestrians.

October is Pedestrian Safety Month in the Alberta Traffic Safety Calendar, and we encourage both motorists and pedestrians to watch out for one another to ensure everyone’s safety.
