One in custody after CPS vehicle stolen

The Calgary Police Service is investigating after a marked police vehicle was stolen in southwest Calgary.

At approximately 1:25 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019, a marked police vehicle was stolen near 28 Avenue and 14 Street S.W., while responding to a report of a suspicious person in the area. The officer had stopped his vehicle on the side of the road near a group of people and briefly stepped out of his car to speak with the individuals, where it is alleged that one of the individuals then got into the police car and drove away.

HAWCS was used along with covert resources to track the stolen police vehicle as it was driven throughout the city. Officers confirmed that no firearms were left inside the vehicle when it was taken.

Approximately 30 minutes later, covert resources were able to safely contain the vehicle in a parkade located on Dr. Carpenter Circle N.W. One man was taken into custody from the scene without incident.

The CPS Traffic Section is now investigating the theft of the police vehicle. The Service is also reviewing the circumstances surrounding the theft to prevent this from happening again in the future.
