Officer-involved shooting in Varsity

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating after an officer-involved shooting that occurred early this morning in northwest Calgary.

At 11:42 p.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022, we were called to the 0-100 block of Varsity Estates Circle N.W., in response to a dispatched call for service of a complaint of a man with a weapon.

Upon arrival, officers located the man in a parkade and attempted to de-escalate the situation over an extended period of time. The man refused to comply with officers’ direction. The situation ultimately escalated to a point that an officer discharged their service weapon. The man was immediately given medical care by officers and EMS who were on scene, and the man has since been transported to hospital in serious but stable condition. ASIRT has been directed to initiate an investigation and CPS will cooperate fully.

One officer sustained minor injuries and was treated on scene.
