Officer-involved shooting in Sunalta

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in following an officer-involved shooting earlier this morning.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016, we were called to the 1700 block of 11 Avenue S.W., for a check on welfare of a woman who was screaming and acting erratically, pounding on windows of nearby vehicles and the front door of an apartment building. As officers arrived on scene, they were confronted by a woman allegedly carrying weapons. Shortly after arrival, events escalated and a one-year member of the CPS discharged her Service firearm. The 27-year-old woman was struck and subsequently died as a result.

No officers were injured as a result of the incident.

The members involved in this incident have the full support of the Executive and the Calgary Police Association.

All further inquiries are to be directed to ASIRT.
