Officer-involved shooting in downtown Calgary

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been called in following an officer-involved shooting in downtown Calgary.

At approximately 2:50 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019, officers were supporting an ongoing parade in the area of the 600 block of 8 Avenue S.W., when a vehicle travelling north on 6 Street, turned east on 8 Avenue S.W., around barriers, heading towards the parade. Officers attempted to block the car with their patrol vehicle, at which point the suspect vehicle did a U-turn, attempting to flee. Officers engaged the vehicle and shots were fired. The shooting occurred at 6 Avenue and 8 Street S.W.

The vehicle continued a short distance to 6 Avenue and 6 Street, where it collided with a bystander vehicle, before coming to a stop. The driver and passenger of the suspect vehicle were taken into custody. Both were injured during the shooting and have been transported to hospital in stable condition. The occupants of the bystander vehicle were not injured.

Officers and pedestrians were not injured during the incident.

It is believed that the vehicle was stolen. It is not yet known what the motivation for the near collision with the parade was.

Roads in the area are expected to remain closed for some time.
