Officer-involved shooting – Shawnessy

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in to investigate following an officer-involved shooting that occurred earlier today in the city`s southeast.

At approximately 4:05 a.m., on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2019, police were called to a parking lot in a shopping complex, located in the 200 block of Shawville Boulevard S.E., for reports of a suspicious person armed with a bat who was making threatening statements.

Police contained the area and encountered a man in his 30s who was believed to be armed with a weapon. The situation escalated at which time the man was shot by police.

After the shooting, the man failed to comply with demands and additional force was necessary to take him into custody and provide required medical attention. The man was taken into custody at which point he was transported to hospital.

A large machete-type knife was recovered at the scene.

No officers were injured in relation to this incident.

The officer, an 11-year member, and all those involved have the full support of CPS and the Calgary Police Association. The officer will now be placed on a 30-day administrative leave.
