Numerous Injuries from Motorhome Fire in SE

At approximately 3:30pm on Friday, August 9, Calgary 9-1-1 started receiving multiple calls for a motorhome on fire in a private lot near 50 Avenue and 25 Street SE.  Thick black smoke could be seen from a distance,  Upon arrival, Calgary Fire Department (CFD) crews found the motorhome fully involved in fire.  CFD crews gained access to the lot with the assistance of Calgary Police members, who were in the area, and then began an aggressive fire attack.  

It was quickly discovered that the two occupants of the motorhome had self-evacuated just prior to CFD's arrival.  Both occupants were assessed by Alberta Health Services EMS crews. and transported to hospital due to smoke inhalation and smoke-related carbon monoxide poisoning.  Unfortunately, fire crews found one small dog deceased inside the motorhome while searching to ensure all occupants were accounted for.   One firefighter was also assessed at the scene due to a heat-related injury, and was not transported.    

Calgary Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire and the CFD Hazardous Materials team was on scene to deal with the propane cylinders on the motorhome.   A Calgary Fire Department fire investigator is at the scene and is working to determine the exact origin and cause of this fire.   Traffic is not expected to be impacted from this incident.

The CFD would like to remind all Calgarians to ensure that they have a Fire Escape Plan, even when camping.  This can include practicing how to escape from a motorhome, trailer, tent or cabin.  Have an outside meeting place, a safe distance away, that is visible and where firefighters can easily find you.
