City installs art panels along 5 Street SW underpass

The City of Calgary is installing sixteen graphic art panels along the 5 Street SW underpass, as part of the Underpass Enhancement Program. Previously part of the Eighth Avenue Place construction hoarding, the panels have been given to The City and include images of various Alberta landscapes created by Alberta artists.

The Centre City Underpass Enhancement Program is being implemented to achieve one of the objectives of the Centre City Plan: to make the Centre City a ‘walkable place that is safe, secure, accessible, legible, interesting and enjoyable for pedestrians’. With 36,000 residents and over 161,000 Calgarians working in the Centre City, the underpasses play a critical gateway role between Centre City and the Beltline.

The 5 Street SW Underpass is fairly new – it is both structurally and functionally sound, and not in need of any major improvements. The art panel installation will serve as an aesthetic improvement, making the walk more interesting and enjoyable for pedestrians who pass by every day.

“We are thrilled to be able to showcase Alberta artists while brightening the journey for those who travel through the underpass,” says Dawn Thome, Project Manager with The City’s Planning Department.

The art panel installation is currently in progress and expected to be complete by Sept. 30, 2014.
