Updated: Missing child from Calgary located near Abbotsford
Update: The suspect in this case has been charged with one count of abducting a child under the age of 14. More charges are still pending.
The Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment (UFVRD) of the RCMP in British Columbia located and secured an eight-year-old girl who went missing from Calgary early on Wednesday morning.
The Calgary Police Service believes the girl was taken by her 19-year-old brother from the Greenview neighbourhood sometime in the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 3, 2016. The child’s family woke up to find the girl, her brother and the family vehicle all missing.
The family contacted police at approximately 5:30 a.m. Through the course of the investigation, Calgary police learned that the suspect was driving west through British Columbia. The RCMP were asked for assistance and located the family’s vehicle driving on the highway just outside of Hope, BC.
The RCMP followed the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop near Abbotsford once it was safe to do so, with the assistance of the Abbotsford Police Department. The missing girl and her older brother were taken into custody without incident. The girl had not been harmed.
Charges are pending against the older brother and investigators are not sure what motivation was behind the incident. To protect the identity of the victim and the privacy of the family, the names of the individuals will not be released.
The father of the girl has been flown out to be reunited with his daughter on a flight arranged by the Missing Children Society of Canada, in partnership with WestJet. The brother will be brought back to Alberta by police later this week.
An AMBER Alert was nearly issued in this case, however the child was located before investigators were able to determine whether the case met the criteria for one.
The Calgary Police Service would like to thank the BC RCMP and the Abbotsford Police Department for their support to locate this girl and would like to specifically thank the UFVRD RCMP for their quick response once her vehicle was located.
