Media Availability: A peek inside Calgary’s new Composting Facility

As we prepare to start green cart service in the southwest, media are invited for a tour inside the new indoor composting facility.

The facility, which is the largest of its kind in Canada, will process 85 million kilograms of food and yard waste every year and turn it into a nutrient-rich compost to be used in the Calgary area.

Media are invited to a guided tour and photo/video opportunity that will explain the composting process and innovative systems in place that help create high-quality, Category A compost. Please note we’ll be able to explain and demonstrate how some of the equipment works; however, food and yard waste material won’t be processed during this tour.

What: Behind the scenes guided tour of the Calgary Composting Facility

Who: Philippa Wagner, Green Cart Implementation Leader, Waste & Recycling Services will offer a guided tour of the facility and will be available for media interviews.

When: Monday, July 17

Time: 10 a.m.

Length of tour: Approximately one hour

Where: The Green Cart Composting facility (Shepard Waste Management Facility) South of 114 Ave. at 68 St. SE. Signs will be posted. Please refer to attached map.

Important safety information:

For safety, the following items are required for tours of the facility:

1. Steel-toed boots
2. Short sleeve shirts – minimum 6 inch sleeve
3. Long pants

Please note this is a one-time tour opportunity, as the facility will not be accessible to visitors once it’s in operation.
