Media Advisory: Swearing-in Ceremony of City Council-Elect
Calgary’s newly elected City Council will be sworn into office at the Official Swearing-In Ceremony of the Members of Council-Elect on Monday, October 23, at 2 p.m. in the Municipal Building Atrium (800 Macleod Trail S.E.).
Pipers will lead the Council-Elect procession from the Calgary Power Reception Hall to the Atrium. The Swearing-In Ceremony will last approximately 45 minutes. An official Council group photo will follow the ceremony and will take place on the Atrium staircase.
A media scrum will follow the Council group photo in the Council Chamber.
The following logistical information is important for members of the media.
Media Production Vehicles
- Media production vehicles will be permitted to park on the lower portion of the Municipal Plaza only. Please ensure required cabling is an adequate length.
Sign-in
- Media will be required to register between 12:00 p.m. – 12:20 p.m. The media sign-in table will be located in the room next to City Hall School.
- Identification will be issued to registrants indicating “MEDIA” status. All media participants are required to wear this ID during their attendance.
Ceremony Instructions
- Media will be provided with a reserved section near the south doors of the Council Chamber. Stationary cameras will be located in the reserved section next to the Information Desk. Council will be using the podium located on the stage against the south wall of the Council Chamber.
- Adams Technologies Inc will be providing audio feed for those media outlets wishing to use it. If access to the feed is required, equipment must be in place by 1:40 p.m.
- If media choose to capturethe procession into the Atrium, they must use the reserved section in the area north of the Council Chamber.
- Photo opportunities will be available throughout the proceedings in designated areas and media cannot leave the sanctioned media area during the proceedings.
Official Council Photo
- The official Council group photo will take place on the Atrium staircase following the ceremony.
- Media will have the opportunity to take photos of the newly sworn-in Council once the official City photographer has taken photos.
Media Scrum
- A media scrum will follow in the Council Chamber following the Council group photo.
- The Mayor will speak first, followed by the newly sworn-in members of Council.
- You will be asked when you sign in which Councillors you would like to speak with.
Photo Opportunities
- 1:55 p.m.: Council-Elect procession begins and will exit Calgary Power Reception Hall, travel north of the Council Chamber and enter the Atrium south of the Information Desk.
- 2:00 p.m.: Swearing-in Ceremony begins. The Mayor’s address is part of the ceremony proceedings.
- 2:45 p.m.: Swearing-in Ceremony ends.
- 2:50 p.m: Official Council group photo on the Atrium steps.
