March 13 update on Bearspaw South Feeder Main repair work

Good work by Calgarians to reduce their water usage continues, with demand well below 500 million litres Thursday.

Yesterday’s water use was 482 million litres, resulting a fourth straight day in the green zone. Thank you to everyone taking everyday actions to save water. It is making a meaningful difference while we complete critical work to reinforce the feeder main.

Please keep doing your part and help us spread the word about the steps you are taking to save water.

Saving just 25 litres of water per person per day is as simple as:

• Flushing toilets only when needed.
   
• Keeping showers to three minutes or less.
   
• Running dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads.

These small, high-impact actions help keep our water system stable while the feeder main is out of service.

Construction and traffic update

Reinforcement work remains on schedule. Excavation continues across all active work areas to prepare pipe segments for reinforcement.

Crews have put trench boxes in place around exposed sections of pipe and are starting to install rebar.

Draining from the final section of pipe continues and remains on track to be completed Saturday.

Traffic changes are in place near active work areas, and drivers should continue to expect delays and plan ahead when travelling through the area.

Unrelated activity resulting in water outage

The City is aware of an issue impacting water in parts of Spruce Cliff, Rosscarrock and Wildwood.

On the morning of Friday, March 13, a water service line broke on private property. In the course of shutting off water to the affected property, there was a disruption to the watermain supplying drinking water to Spruce Cliff and limited areas of Wildwood and Rosscarrock.

Crews are actively working to restore water, and water wagons are being deployed to the affected area. More information will be shared as it is available, and updates will be posted to calgary.ca/wateroutages.

This issue is not related to the Bearspaw South Feeder Main or reinforcement work being done on it, nor did it involve a water main break. The issue is not expected to increase our overall water demand.
