Man sought in homicide on Canada-wide warrants

UPDATE: Jesse MARTINEZ was arrested on Oct. 21, 2021, and is no longer wanted on warrants.

We are asking for the public’s help to locate a man wanted in connection to the fatal shooting of John Mitchell Smith Jr.

Jesse Michael MARTINEZ, 35, of Calgary, is wanted on Canada-wide warrants for second-degree murder.

On Sunday, Oct. 10, 2021, officers were called to the Junction Underground nightclub, located at 628 8 Ave. S.W., around 2:40 a.m., for reports that someone had been shot. The victim, John Mitchell Smith Jr., was taken to hospital but died later as a result of his injuries.

“Our homicide investigators, and all of the supporting investigative teams, have worked around the clock since this tragic event occurred to identify the suspect and hold him accountable,” said Staff Sergeant Martin Schiavetta of the CPS Homicide Unit. “We are asking the public to call police if they know of Jesse Michael MARTINEZ’s whereabouts.”
