Man in custody in Pineridge incident
One man has been taken into custody following a 17-hour standoff with an armed man inside a home in the community of Pineridge.
At approximately 5:50 a.m., on Thursday, April 22, 2021, we were called to the 600 block of Pineland Road N.E., for reports of property damage. Subsequent information revealed that a man, believed to be armed, was in the basement suite of a residence and was threatening to shoot others.
Around 11:30 a.m., several shots were fired from the suite into the community. In response, officers closed several roads and pathways into the area and issued a shelter in place order for nearby residences.
Initial attempts to force the man out of the residence failed and entering the house presented significant risk to officers and the man inside. After attempting to negotiate a peaceful resolution, officers were able to successfully force the man out of the residence around 11 p.m., where he was taken into custody.
The man was transported to hospital with minor injuries following his arrest.
Residents in the area no longer need to shelter in place and those who have been unable to access their homes can now return.
We are grateful to the community for their support and patience during this incident. Our primary goal was to protect life and we are happy that this incident was resolved safely.
We would also like to thank the RCMP, Calgary Fire Department, EMS, Calgary Transit and the Canadian Red Cross for their assistance during this very long day.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
