Man dies following fatal altercation in downtown Calgary

One man has been charged following a fatal altercation that occurred last weekend in the community of Mission.

On Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021, at approximately 10:45 p.m., we were called to an apartment located in the 300 block of 26 Avenue S.W., for reports of a man in medical distress. EMS attended and after significant efforts were able to stabilize the victim and transport him to hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2021.

The investigation was transferred to the Homicide Unit and an autopsy was conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2021. The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Stephen SCOTT.

Investigators believe that SCOTT had been socializing with friends at an apartment on Saturday evening. SCOTT briefly left the residence with another man, at which time an altercation occurred, and the victim ultimately sustained fatal injuries.

After dedicating a number of resources to review evidence and interview witnesses, officers identified a suspect, who was arrested without incident on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2021.

Levi Michael SCOTT, 32, of Calgary, has been charged with one count of second-degree murder. His next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 8, 2021.

The victim and suspect are cousins.

“This investigation was a collaborative effort between several units across the Service,” says Staff Sergeant Martin Schiavetta of the CPS Homicide Unit. “Through great teamwork, we were able to work around the clock and provide closure in this case. Our condolences go out to Stephen’s family.”
