Man charged with drug trafficking following tip from the community

The Calgary Police Service District 4 General Investigations Unit (GIU) has charged a man with 13 drug- and weapon-related charges following a traffic stop related to the Daylight Initiative where more than $50,000 worth of drugs was seized.

At the beginning of March 2019, investigators from District 4 GIU received a tip from a member of public that a man was trafficking drugs, including methamphetamine, in the community of Erin Woods.

Police began investigating and on Wednesday, March 20, 2019, one man was taken into custody following a traffic stop. Detectives also executed a search warrant on a residence located in the 700 block of Erin Woods Drive S.E., in relation to this investigation.

As a result, the following items were seized:

  • 327 grams of crack cocaine
  • 187 grams of methamphetamine
  • 2.4 grams of fentanyl
  • 468 pills, suspected to be codeine
  • $7,980 cash
  • .357 Magnum revolver
  • Machete
  • Brass knuckles

Photos of some of the seized items are available on The City of Calgary Newsroom.

Vincent Tien Thinh DINH, 22, of Calgary, has since been charged with five counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and one count each of possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000, careless storage of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a restricted weapon with ammunition, possession of a weapon obtained by crime and possession of stolen property under $5,000. DINH will next appear in court on Wednesday, March 27, 2019.

This investigation was initiated as a direct result of the ongoing work of the Daylight Initiative to address the exponential growth of methamphetamine presence in our City.

“We are extremely grateful for the relationship we have with our community and this success is a direct result of that,” says Cst. Rob MacKenzie from the District 4 General Investigations Unit. “As police officers, our primary goal is to make sure that Calgarians feel safe in their own community. We will continue to target drug trafficking to keep our communities safe and as part of our duty to protect our most vulnerable citizens.”

Anyone with information on the trafficking of drugs is asked to contact the police non-emergency number, 403-266-1234, or Crime Stoppers anonymously using any of the following methods:
