Man charged with dangerous driving of stolen U-Haul
We have charged one man who is believed to be responsible for the theft of a U-Haul truck and driving dangerously throughout the city’s southwest area last night.
On Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at approximately 9:25 p.m., police observed a U-Haul truck being driven in the community of Southwood that had been reported stolen.
A short time later, police attempted a traffic stop along eastbound Anderson Road S.W., near 14 Street S.W. The suspect fled at a high rate of speed, running red lights at various intersections along Anderson Road S.W.
The truck then proceeded to drive erratically into oncoming traffic along 210 Avenue S.W., to the Legacy area near Macleod Trail S.W., where members deployed a tire deflation device that damaged two of the U-Haul’s tires.
The suspect continued to drive on damaged rims, going northbound in the southbound lanes along Macleod Trail S.W., near Shawnessy Boulevard S.W.
The suspect proceeded to drive the stolen truck to a residence in the 11000 block of Sacramento Drive S.W., where he struck three marked CPS vehicles while fleeing the area, as well as several unoccupied parked vehicles. The suspect continued driving before coming to a stop near the 14000 block of Macleod Trail S.W., in the southbound lanes. The suspect was arrested and taken into custody. He was found to have outstanding criminal warrants, was in breach of previous release conditions and had a provincially suspended license.
As a result, Alec John MCLENNAN, 28, is charged with one count each of dangerous driving, flight from police, hit-and-run, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and three counts of failing to comply with a court order.
MCLENNAN was transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He is scheduled to next appear in court on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
“This was a complex and highly dynamic situation that was thankfully resolved safely without any injury to Calgarians or to officers,” says Superintendent Scott Boyd of the Calgary Police Service Community Policing South Division. “With the help of patrol and canine members and many other areas across the Service, we were able to successfully apprehend the person who senselessly endangered the lives of Calgarians.”
