Man charged with animal cruelty

The Calgary Police Service and The Calgary Humane Society has charged one man following a joint, six-month-long animal abuse investigation.

At the end of November 2018, police were made aware of concerns regarding the alleged animal abuse of two cats in Calgary.

Detectives began investigating and identified a total of six cats which were believed to have suffered injuries consistent with animal abuse. As a result of their injuries, two of the cats were humanely euthanized prior to the investigation being initiated.

It is believed that the suspect owned the cats or had access to the cats at various points between December 2017 and November 2018 when the abuse occurred.

On Wednesday, June 5, 2019, police charged Cole EHBRECHT, 19, of Calgary with eighteen Criminal Code charges relating to cruelty to animals. He will next appear in court on Wednesday, June 19, 2019.

“We rely on information from the public as well as outside agencies so that we can intervene and protect animals suffering abuse,” says Detective Shawna Baldwin of the Calgary Police Service District 4 General Investigations Unit. “We continue to work extremely closely with our partners at The Calgary Humane Society to ensure that all animals are protected.”

The Calgary Police Service often works together with investigators from the Calgary Humane Society to investigate cases involving criminal animal cruelty.
