Man charged in serious assault of child

The Calgary Police Service Child Abuse Unit has charged a man in the March 2018 serious assault of a child.

On Sunday, March 11, 2018, police were contacted by Children’s Services in relation to a seriously injured four-year-old child that had been taken to hospital by her mother. The child was initially deemed to be in critical life-threatening condition. The child was later upgraded to serious condition, however, she had received what are believed to be potentially life-altering injuries.

Investigators have learned that at the time of the incident that led to the child’s injuries, her step-father was the only adult in the home at the time. It is alleged the step-father’s explanation of how the child received the injuries does not align with medical evidence.

As a result of a nearly year-long investigation, the child’s step-father has been charged with one count of aggravated assault. The Calgary Police Service is unable to name the accused as it would identify the victim.
