Man charged in relation to door-to-door thefts
We have charged one man in relation to a series of door-to-door thefts that occurred throughout Calgary.
Between Friday, Aug. 11, 2023, and Friday, Sept. 15, 2023, investigators identified seven door-to-door break and enters targeting Calgary seniors that were believed to be connected. During these incidents, an offender approached a victim’s home, posing as an inspector or city employee stating that he needed to check their furnace or hot water tank and needed to gain access to their residence. While inside, the offender stole various items, including jewelry and wallets. After the offender left the residence, the victims later realized that items from their home were missing and contacted police. In addition to cash, identity documents and bank cards, a total of 54 pieces of jewelry were stolen from the seven victims.
Investigators identified a suspect, and on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2023, officers located and arrested him in the northeast community of Mayland Heights.
Officers worked to track down the stolen jewelry, which had been sold to pawn shops throughout the city and were able to locate all 54 pieces that had been stolen.
Ajaypal GILL, 31, of Edmonton, has since been charged with one count each of break and enter and trafficking stolen property. GILL will next appear in court on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023.
It is believed that there were several other similar break and enters that occurred during the same time period. At this time, we are continuing to investigate whether any of these incidents are connected to this series.
