Man charged in Highland Park fatal stabbing

We have charged a man in relation to a homicide that occurred in Highland Park in September.

Around 3:30 p.m., on Monday, Sept. 21, 2020, a member of the public reported a man in medical distress on the steps of a home in the 4800 block of 1 Street N.E. EMS and the Calgary Fire Department provided medical aid, but the 35-year-old man died at the scene.

We believe the man was stabbed at approximately 2 p.m., in the area where he was found. After an autopsy was completed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the victim was identified as Dustin KUSCH, 35, of Calgary.

We sought to identify two people found on CCTV, who we believe had information about the incident. Thanks to tips from the public, we were able to identify the individuals and further the investigation.

Investigators believe the suspect stole the victim’s vehicle as he fled the scene. The victim and his assailant were known to each other, but the specific motive for the attack remains under investigation.

Justin Malcolm SUTHERLAND, 33, was arrested in Edmonton on Monday, Dec. 14, 2020, and charged with second-degree murder and theft of a motor vehicle. He will next appear in court on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2020.

We would like to thank the Edmonton Police Service for their assistance in locating the suspect in this case.
