Man charged in dangerous driving incident involving stolen vehicle

A suspended driver is facing 16 charges following a lengthy dangerous driving incident involving a stolen vehicle on Monday.

Around 1:20 p.m., on Monday, Oct. 20, 2025, officers located a stolen vehicle with two occupants in the area of 19 Avenue S.E. and 35 Street S.E. Officers began covert surveillance of the stolen vehicle and observed a third passenger enter the vehicle. The Helicopter Air Watch for Community Safety (HAWCS) took over surveillance of the vehicle while a marked police vehicle moved in to attempt a traffic stop. The suspect driver fled from police at a high rate of speed. The patrol vehicle disengaged while HAWCS continued to follow the vehicle from the air.

Shortly after, the passengers exited the vehicle in the 1500 block of 47 Street S.E., and were quickly taken into custody. One of the passengers was arrested on outstanding warrants and the other was released from custody without charge.

The driver continued to drive dangerously through residential areas of the city for an extended period of time at high rates of speed, failing to stop for red lights and driving into oncoming traffic. He narrowly avoided colliding with pedestrians in several intersections.

As police officers were setting up to intervene with the stolen vehicle, at approximately 2:35 p.m., the driver stopped in the 600 block of Fifth Avenue S.W. and was promptly arrested without further incident.

A search located approximately 26 grams of methamphetamine, 43 grams of fentanyl, two scales, approximately $470 in cash and bear spray.  

The suspect was found to have a criminal suspension of his driver’s licence, bound by a release order, a probation order and had several outstanding warrants for his arrest.

Dustin Harold GRAINGER, 33, is charged with:

·        One count of possession of stolen property under $5,000

·        One count of flight from a police officer

·        One count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle

·        One count of driving while disqualified or prohibited

·        Four counts of failing to comply with a probation order

·        Three counts of failing to comply with a release order

·        Two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking

·        One count of possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime

·        One count of driving an uninsured motor vehicle on the highway

·        One count of operating an unregistered motor vehicle

GRAINGER remains in custody and will next appear in court on Friday, Oct. 24, 2025.

“This driver posed a significant risk to our community. It is only by luck that no one was injured during his reckless disregard for public safety as he sped through our city. This is criminal behaviour and we will not stop until we have drivers such as this in custody,” says District 4 Staff Sergeant Lee Dunbar.
