Man charged in connection with sexual assault

The Calgary Police Service has charged a man in connection with what is believed to be a random sexual assault in the community of Southwood.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., on Thursday, August 15, 2019, a woman was walking through a parking lot near the south intersection of Southport Road SW and Southport Lane S.W.

A man the woman did not know pulled into the parking lot near her, got out of his vehicle and started following her. It is believed he then approached her from behind and touched her sexually without consent.

The man immediately ran back to his vehicle, an older-model grey Ford Escape SUV, and fled the scene.

Police have charged Alejandro Jose CERVERA MARIN, 20, of Calgary, with sexual assault and operating a motor vehicle without a licence in connection with this incident.

Investigators are still working to determine if this incident is connected to a similar case that occurred in the community Cedarbrae in September 2019.

Anyone with information on either incident who has not already spoken to police is asked to call the Calgary Police Service non-emergency number at 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers through any of the following methods:
