Man charged in 2022 fatal shooting

Our Homicide Unit has charged a Calgary man who is believed to be connected to the death of 27-year-old Shakiel Ahkeem BENNETT two years ago.

At approximately 10:50 a.m., Monday, July 4, 2022, police were called for reports of shots fired in the 0 to 100 block of Falsby Way N.E. Upon arrival, one man was confirmed deceased, and the death was considered suspicious.

After a lengthy investigation that included interviewing several witnesses and examining CCTV footage, police have arrested the man who is believed to be responsible for Shakiel’s death.

As a result, on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2024, Michael Douglas KEEPNESS, 37, was charged with one count of first-degree murder.

KEEPNESS remains in custody and will next appear in court on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024.  

Initially, investigators were looking to speak with an unknown passenger in a black Nissan Rogue driven by the victim prior to the shooting. KEEPNESS was not the passenger.

“Bringing closure to grieving families is something we strive to do in every case, and we know not every family gets answers,” says Staff Sergeant Mark Rahn of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit. “Our team of dedicated investigators, spanning multiple areas across the Service, worked diligently over the last two years to gather the necessary evidence that has led us to the person who is responsible, so that he can be held accountable for his actions.”
