Man charged following weekend stabbing

One man has been charged following a violent altercation that took place outside of a northeast mall on the weekend.

On Sunday, April 26, 2026, at approximately 3:30 p.m., police were called for reports of a stabbing that occurred outside of the Pacific Place Mall, located at 999 36 St. N.E. It is believed that two men were involved in a physical altercation, which resulted in one man obtaining a knife from his vehicle and returning to stab the second man multiple times.

The victim, a man in his 50s, was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition, where he has since been upgraded to critical but stable condition.

The second man was arrested without incident by officers on scene.

The men are known to each other, and investigators believe the altercation was the result of an ongoing dispute.

At the time of the incident, the area outside of the mall was crowded and police believe there are several witnesses who have not yet spoken with investigators.

We are looking to speak with anyone who witnessed this incident or who may have cell phone or dashcam footage.

“Although we have laid charges in this case, we are still looking to piece together the events that let up to this altercation,” says Staff Sgt. Keith Shufelt of the CPS District 4 General Investigations Unit. “We are continuing to collect witness accounts and video evidence to confirm timelines and understand how the situation escalated.”

Long Thanh TRAN, 45, of Calgary, has been charged with one count each of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public. He will appear in court today, Tuesday, April 27, 2026.
