Man charged following break-in at evacuated residence

We have laid charges against one man following a break-in that occurred at an evacuated residence following a house fire in northeast Calgary last month. The same suspect has also been charged in three additional incidents, including the theft of a vehicle, a commercial break and enter and for the possession of weapons.

On Thursday, March 30, 2023, at approximately 1:45 p.m., a woman and her husband were returning to their residence located in the 700 block of Maryvale Way N.E., after being evacuated following an explosion at a neighbouring house several days earlier. Upon arrival at their home, the victims confronted a man who was exiting their residence. The man claimed to be security and quickly fled the area. The victims then entered their home, where they observed evidence of a break-in and contacted police. Several pieces of jewelry had been taken during the break-in.

Officers collected evidence from the scene and began investigating, which led to the positive identification of the suspect. Investigators applied for a warrant and began working to locate the suspect.

Several weeks later, on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at approximately 3 a.m., police were called for a break and enter at Village Square Leisure Centre, located at 2623 56 St. N.E. Upon arrival, officers located one man inside the building and took him into custody without incident.

During the arrest, officers discovered this man was the same individual wanted on warrants for the previous break and enter. The suspect was also confirmed to be connected to the theft of a vehicle that had been left running on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023, as well as an incident involving the possession of a prohibited weapon on Saturday, April 22, 2023.

As a result, Daniel Riley JOHNSON, 53, of Calgary, has been charged with:

  • Two counts of break and enter
  • One count of theft over $5,000
  • One count of possession of break-in instruments
  • One count of unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon
  • One count of carrying a concealed weapon
  • One count of disguise with intent
  • One count of driving an uninsured motor vehicle on a highway
  • One count of driving while disqualified or prohibited

This investigation remains ongoing and additional charges are pending. JOHNSON will next appear in court on Friday, April 28, 2023.

Investigators have not yet recovered the jewelry that was stolen during the initial break and enter. The stolen jewelry includes nine gold chains with various pendants, a ruby ring, opal earrings, a Swarovski pendant with matching earrings, pearl earrings, a pearl pendant, a jade ring pendant and silver chains. Unfortunately, photos of the jewelry are not available.

Anyone with information about this incident or the location of the jewelry is asked to contact police by calling police at 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers through any of the following methods:
